Afraid of Clowns?!
Imagine your library turned into the
center ring! Marvel
at children turned into wild animals! Be amazed by young clowns and
tightrope
walkers! Based on Moogie's acclaimed "Afraid of Clowns?!" program,
this is ideal for preschoolers who've never seen a real live clown or
who may
be hesitant about one. Moogie shows up in her everyday clothes. While
the
children are enchanted by her silly antics she transforms into a clown.
Once
she becomes a clown, she and the children create their own circus. Through the power of imagination, Moogie's
rainbow parachute becomes a circus tent. An adventure in pretending!
This innovative program is
most appropriate for ages 3 - 7 and last about 45 minutes. The fee is
$225. Mileage charges may apply. Discounts for additional programs on
the same day in the same library system.
Moogie has her bags packed and the show is on the road
again!

Your
visit during Toddler Tales this past week was truly a joy. I have known
some of these youngsters since they were practically babies and have
never seen them so enraptured or animated as when they were interacting
with you during your clown program. It was a very special part of our
National Library Week Celebration.
And if there's anything I
can do to get the word out that "Moogie the Clown is GREAT!" please let
me know,

Suggestions for parents
Put yourself in your child's place.
To you, A clown is an old friend.
To a young child, a clown is someone who looks, dresses and acts
differently than the people they are used to. They do not have your
frame of reference and a clown is a stranger. Take some time to prepare
them for the experience. Find a picturebook or video about clowns.
Describe what Clowns look like and how they may dress and act
differently than what your child is used to. Don't make the suggestion
that, "You might be scared" because your child might think you're
suggesting that clowns are something to be feared. The more prepared
and positive your child feels, the more likely a positive outcome. Be
accessible to your child, it is a new experience, stay within view,
preferably within reach if your little one is unsure. Take your time
and don't rush
her into the experience. Little children might be fascinated by a clown
from
a distance but face to face may be an entirely different matter. Move
in
slowly and if your child seems tentative, let him sit back and watch
while
other children interact with the clown. Parents might also want to
shake
hands with the clown and chat for a few minutes to show that this
strange person is fun, not frightening. A parent should keep an eye out
for "hyper" entertainers -- the ones who talk too loud and move too
fast. Head them
off when necessary. Fear of costumed characters is normal. You needn't
be embarrassed by it and don't compare your child to other children who
are enjoying the experience it's o.k. if your child doesn't like clowns
-- life will go on and the child who reacts with dismay this year may
be
the very one who want to run off to join the circus next year.
